Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

What is facial rejuvenation acupuncture?

This is a very popular treatment in my practice! Facial rejuvenation acupuncture (otherwise known as cosmetic acupuncture) is a less invasive method that helps skin appear healthier and vibrant, while reducing the signs of aging. It involves insertion of fine needles in the face, averaging around 50. This is similar to microneedling but more targeted and less needles are used. A typical facial rejuvenation treatment course is 8 to 10 sessions done once weekly followed by maintenance of one session per month. Improvements are typically noticeable at session 4 or 5. Each session is around 45 minutes with the initial appointment being longer. This is because during the initial assessment, a health history is taken to individualize treatment. Often acupuncture isn’t just reserved to the face. Needles are placed in other areas of the body to address concerns you may be struggling with such as digestion, anxiety, fatigue, pain etc.

Does acupuncture work for facial rejuvenation?

The short answer, yes it does! It works by causing small microtraumas in the face that your body repairs through increased production of collagen, the result of which is a natural solution to fill fine lines and wrinkles as well as improve elasticity. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture also increases blood circulation in the face, bringing oxygen and nutrients to liven complexion. However, despite promising results more research is required to fully elucidate its skin care benefits, some of which include the following:

· Decrease in the length and depth of wrinkles

· Increase in facial muscle tone

· Reduction in sagging around the eyes, cheeks and chin

· Improved skin texture

· Decreased acne

· Less puffiness

How long do the beneficial effects last?

I get asked this question a lot and my answer is that it depends because everyone’s body and responses to treatment are different. That being said, it has been reported that effects can last up to 5 years with monthly maintenance.

Is facial rejuvenation better than botox and fillers?

It’s important to manage expectations here. Facial rejuvenation isn’t a quick fix solution. The goal is to enhance facial muscle and skin tone in order to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for longer term effects. It’s a more holistic approach with less side effects than standard injections. However if you do injections, this does not mean that facial rejuvenation acupuncture isn’t a potential solution for you. Just wait 8 weeks before getting cosmetic acupuncture.

Are there side effects?

The only potential side effect is minor bruising that sometimes occurs in a small percentage of cases. Bruising often heals quickly especially with ice application after treatment. Individuals who should avoid this treatment include clients with bleeding disorders, uncontrolled type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure as well as acute headaches.
